Why to Play Teemo
Before we start on the Ultimate Guide to Teemo we first want to tell you why you should play him. His overall strengths and weaknesses are as follows:
- Poison Damage
- Extreme Movement Speed Skill for Escapes/Chases
- Strong Snowball Potential
- Global Taunt
- Weak 1v1 potential
- No hard CC
- Mushrooms easily countered by wards
These champions give Teemo a hard time in game due to having a kit that can stop Teemo from doing what he wants to do. Here are some of the biggest issues and how you can try to overcome the challenges they bring.
Rumble is considered a counter because he can drop Teemo’s HP instantly with his damage. Using his Q(Flamespitter), he’ll be able to harass you in lane without even trying to auto attack you rendering your Q(Blinding Dart) useless to him. You can try to play safe against him and burn his HP bar with your E(Toxic Shot) while you are at a distance that his abilities won’t reach you.
Vladimir is considered a counter because he can use his Q(Transfusion) to return his HP bar as soon as you try to harass him. He also builds magic resist items that builds with ruby crystals gaining more ability power to his kit. Avoid facing him head-on and focus on farming early in the game. Try to communicate with your jungler and let him initiate the fight so Vladimir can cast his abilities letting you hit him freely without any trade.
Ornn is considered a counter because he is a menace at being a tanky top laner who softens up his enemy target in the lane. He’ll be charging with his E(Searing Charge) when he knows his Q(Volcanic Rupture) is near you knocking you up giving him the ability to smack you hit his hammer. You can try to dodge avoid his pillar to negate his combos while you constantly hit him with your E(Toxic Shot) but do not all in Ornn as his ultimate(Call of the Forge God) can still lock you down. Focus on building your ability power items and aid your team later in the game.
These champions work well with Teemo and should be considered being picked alongside him if possible. Here are some of the biggest synergies and how you can abuse them.
Cassiopeia works well with Teemo because she constantly hits the enemy with her poison as well as turning them into stone. With her W(Miasma), she can slow them down and negates movement abilities enabling her to hit multiples E(Twin Fang)s to them and once the enemy team attempts to face her she’ll just stun them with her ultimate(Petrifying Gaze) giving you the opportunity to combine your poisons together hitting them for a long period of time.
Olaf works well with Teemo because he also scales stronger later in the game which can aid Teemo in providing the best hits he can get to the team. When you have an AD bruiser like Olaf in the front line, he can smack them all while Teemo hits them with his poisonous darts. Enemies will be distracted to Olaf’s Q(Undertow) and will forget that a Yordle can burst you down if left untouched.
Leona works well with Teemo because she offers a lot of CC for his team. Using her E(Zenith Blade) and Q(Shield of Daybreak), she can initiate for Teemo giving him untapped seconds to constantly hit the enemy with his E(Toxic Shots). Also, her ultimate(Solar Flare) can aid Teemo to place a bomb in front of many enemy champions, damaging and slowing them without being hit. This will create perfect opportunities for Teemo to shine.
Teemo Summoner Spells
Teemo’s recommended Summoner Spells are Ignite and Flash because you want to deal as much damage as you can against your enemy laner. Ignite will deal with top laners who has healing capabilities which can turn your skills around burning them for 5 seconds. If you want to assist your teammates on the other side of the map and create some plays,
You can consider using Teleport and Flash because these spells have the ability to move you from one place to another with perfect ease. Collaborating with your team to place wards behind enemy lines might help you turn team fights around with your poisonous damage.
Teemo’s recommended runes are Hail of Blades, Cheap Shot, Eyeball Collection, Ravenous Hunter on Domination as primary and Alacrity with Coup De grace on Precision as secondary because you want to have your fastest attack speed for your auto attacks in just 3 hits and deal tons of damage with your E (Toxic Shot). This build is great when facing enemy compositions with fewer tanks in them giving you the opportunity to drop their HP down easily. You want to hit as many auto attacks to burn your opponent in the lane with poison.
If you want a different rune page that scales in the late game while also adding more damage to your abilities, you can consider using Summon Aery, Manaflow Band/Nullifying Orb, Absolute Focus and Gathering Storm on Sorcery as primary and Cheap Shot with Ravenous Hunter on domination as secondary because you want to sustain mana while also maximizing the highest damage output you can offer to your team as Teemo.
Both builds will be using +10 Attack Speed on Offense, +9 Adaptive Force on Offense, and +6 Armor on Flex.
Teemo’s recommended items change depending on the situation, however, the following items will give you a good idea of what to build in different situations.
- Teemo starts with Doran’s Ring if he wants to have more ability power, health, and mana regeneration in the laning phase.
- Teemo starts with Doran’s Shield if he wants to have a good defensive item early on to have a better chance of facing his opponent in the lane. This also increases basic attacks and regenerates health after taking damage.
- Teemo uses Void Staff very well because it provides magic penetration that increases the damage output. This will help him deal more in his auto attacks with E(Toxic Shot) while throwing shrooms and blinding targets as a top lane bully in the early game.
- Teemo uses Nashor’s Tooth very well because of the additional attack speed, ability power and cool-down reduction it provides to the Yordle. This item works efficiently with his E(Toxic Shot) where he can further hit more auto attacks to his opponent in the lane.
- Teemo uses Liandrys Torment very well because of its ability to gain more damage for each second in combat with champions. Teemo wants to prolong team-fights and position himself in a spot where he can constantly hit his E(Toxic Shot) and continuously damage enemy champions while also blinding AD ones with his Q(Blinding Dart) to reduce the damage output they can place unto your team.
- User Sorcery Shoes to increase Teemo’s magic penetration with his abilities burning more damage through his opponent in the lane
Offensive Situational Items
- If you want to deal with an insane amount of damage after your Q(Blinding Dart) to your target, you can build Lich Bane because acquiring this item will provide extra movement speed as well as ability power and Spellblade which will proc your sheen and strengthen your auto attack base on your basic attack plus your ability power. This will surprise the enemy after being blinded giving you more room to hit your E(Toxic Shot) with an additional early empowered auto.
- If you want to have more magic damage, can build Morellonomicon because taking this item will increase ability power as well as magic penetration. It also works well with Teemo’s core items inflicting grievous wounds to enemies.
Defensive Situational Items
- If you want to defense against assassins or AD bruisers, you can build Zhonya’s Hourglass because taking this item will not only give you the armor you need but also the magic damage and the ability to go into statis for a few seconds which will save you from being killed.
- If you want to have more protection to an enemy team with heavy AP damage dealers, you can build Banshee’s Veil because this item provides more ability power to Teemo while also granting a shield that blocks the next ability from the enemy giving you the chance to counter their burst or escape their premise.
Full Build Example
An example full build for Teemo can consist of
- Nashor’s Tooth
- Sorcerer’s Shoes
- Liandry’s Torment
- Void Staff
- Rabadon’s Death Cap
This is the most recommended build path to Teemo for 1v1ing enemy top laners that are AD reliant. You can protect yourself from the damage of their abilities using your Q(Blinding Dart) while you kite them out with your E(Toxic Shot). This is an efficient way to deal with champions like Aatrox, Sett, Darius, Fiora, etc, as you can almost take out their auto attacks which will make them lean on their abilities. Avoid their skill shots and you’ll be able to dominate in your lane while also providing pressure to the other teammates. Your build will utilize your ability power scaling in your items which will create plays out of nowhere when enemy champions step on your ultimate(Noxious Trap). Make use of this advantage and try to split push the top lane as far as possible. On team-fights, you will be like the second APC that will burst down champions with your poisonous darts.
Passive - Guerilla Warfare
If Teemo stands and does not move for 1.5 seconds on the bush, he becomes stealthed permanently where he can move around and without being seen. You can also hide outside the bush but upon movement, you will be seen. He then leaves stealth and gains “Element of Surprise” increasing his attack speed for 2 seconds. This is a great way to startle the enemy and burst him out with your damage.
Q - Blinding Dart
Teemo hits an enemy with a powerful dart that will cover the enemy’s vision dealing magic damage plus ability power blinding the target causing him/her to miss their attacks for a few seconds. This is Teemo’s weapon of choice wherein he pins his enemy and lets him hit them with poison. This ability is great when facing AD champions that utilize their auto attacks in a skirmish. Teemo can counter their combos and strike them with ease. Enemies like Rive, Aatrox, Kled, Lee Sin, will only be able to use abilities without their base AD attacks for awhile.
W - Move Quick
This ability passively grants Teemo increased movement speed until he is struck by a champion or turret. This passive will return 5 seconds after the last struck you’ve done on a champion or a turret. When activated, Teemo will gain double of his passive movement speed for 3 seconds and will not lose it even if he is hit. This is used to engage on enemy targets and while constantly hitting them with your poison. You can orbwalk or kite with this ability while you dodge and kite enemy skill-shots. You can also use this to escape ganks from enemy junglers or team-fights that you think are not winnable already to avoid further deaths.
E - Toxic Shot
Every time Teemo auto attacks an enemy, he will poison the target dealing magic damage plus ability power each second for 4 seconds. This is Teemo’s bread and butter on the top lane as he requires you to auto-attack the enemy target for him to gain an advantage. Orbwalking or kiting while hitting the enemy will poison the target and will constantly reduce his HP.
R - Noxious Trap
Teemo places a trap which hides and arms in 1 second. If any enemy steps on it, it deals magic damage plus ability power by poisoning nearby enemies while also applying slow and revealing them for 4 seconds. This trap will last for 5 minutes and can be used as a vision for Teemo. Casting shrooms on traps will bounce them further in the direction they were originally tossed. Teemo is effective in the team as someone who hides his shrooms and surprises his enemy with the damage of his ability power. Placing the shrooms in the right place at the right time can turn the tide around in your team’s favor.
Ability Skill Order
The skill order for Teemo is R – E – Q – W. The reason is you always max your ultimate whenever possible which is on levels 6, 11, and 16. Then you’d want to emphasize on Teemo’s E(Toxic Shot) so every auto attack you do does tremendous damage to the enemy. Q(Blinding Dart) should be next as this is a great counter for hard-hitting champions that will face you and lastly, you will max W(Move Quick) as this will be used as either initiation or escape tool.
A Power Spike is when a time champion reaches a level or builds an item that makes them a lot stronger than other champions in the game. Teemo’s Power Spike is when he reaches level 6 and higher because he scales better in the late game and gives more utility to the team as well as when he completes his core items Nashor’s Tooth, Zhonya’s Hourglass, and Liandry’s Torment because of his kiting potential, the protection, and the burning effect that he can damage to the enemy lane giving him more spaces to work within the top lane.
Passive + E
This combo is his bread and butter for harassing opponents in the lane. Hide before hitting the enemy laner to gain your passive’s attack speed then constantly do damage with your E(Toxic Shot) to prevent them from gaining more gold from you.
E + Q + E
This combo is used for kiting down an enemy target in the lane. Teemo utilizes his poison darts and focuses on hitting as many auto attacks to activate his E(Toxic Shot). When your enemy top laner tries to converge on you, you can click your Q(Blinding Dart) to blind them while kiting them again with your E and creating distance to avoid your melee attacks or skill shots which is the perfect situation for you.
R + R
This combo is used for placing bombs in farther areas without you face checking the bush. This is a great way to ensure you do not get destroyed from enemy opponents that are waiting for you to check a bush or trap you in an area where you can not escape. Utilize the mechanic of his shrooms to help you gain vision.
E + Q + W + E
This combo is similar to the E + Q + E combo above but you are now utilizing your W(Move Quick) to create more distance to the enemy laner. Sometimes your movement speed stats aren’t enough to position yourself to a spot where they can not reach you that is why using your W is required. When using your W, make sure to be prepared for ganks as they will know you have it on cool-down.
Teemo is not a mechanically champion where you have a lot of combos in play to choose from. He is a straight forward hard-hitting Yordle that focuses on his ability to hit more E(Toxic Shot) to the enemy team. His R(Noxious Trap) will assist him with vision, wave clear and teamfights that needs additional magic damage for your team. Being aware of this will make you a better Teemo user.
How to Play Teemo
When Teemo is in the early stages of the game, focus on clearing the wave and harassing your enemy with your E(Toxic Shot). This will provide you an edge early on before enemy junglers attempt to gank you. When you’ve leveled up to 2 before the enemy top laner does, take this advantage to let him know whose boss by kiting him down. If he tries to approach and damage you with his abilities, use your Q(Blinding Dart) to negate his auto attacks and further hit him with your own auto attacks. Repeat this process in the lane and try to be a menace before he/she gets an item. When you’ve leveled up to 6 place visions around your area like the tri bush and in your lane to know when a jungler is going to attack you. Utilize your passive(Guerrilla Warfare) and hide before attacking them again with your E. This is the most optimal damage you can do within the game. When you want to all in their top laner and you know you have enough damage with your first 2 items, then try to place a shroom behind him if he is going to attack. This will pop your ultimate and slow him down giving you more time and space to hit the opponent. Continue doing this until he gets annoyed and either move to another lane or hide in his tower allowing you to do damage to his tower while he is afraid to get close to you.
Use shrooms and pinks to get a stranglehold on your top jungle vision. This will cement your lead after you’ve taken the first tower and are threatening tier 2. Take your time to shroom or pink the entry points to the lane before showing back to avoid getting ganked without knowing. This will keep you away from harm while you scale your items to be a reckoning in the late game. Buy control wards and set up traps so you can fully utilize your passive(Guerrilla Warfare) especially when you have built your core items plus other AP ones. Also, take Oracle lens to avoid being murdered in your lane as they might be hiding and ready to kill you.
Split Pushing – Teemo split pushing for the team is ineffective as most of the champions in today’s season are mobile and are able to catch him hard. Never try to solo in lane cause you will regret it and give kills to the enemy team. Force group and focus on being the second damage dealer at the back line with your ADC. Create team-fights where you get to hit as many auto attacks as you can while throwing some shrooms in the middle of the fight.
Objective Control – Season 10 has been dominant to the early to mid-game phase and you should be prepared to take more leads even though you need to scale. When trying to take objectives, place shrooms in areas where you know the enemy team will be coming from. Help damage the objective like the Rift Herald and Dragon but position yourself where you can easily flash or use your W(Move Quick) to escape. Do not be a hero and be in front of enemy lines as you will lose your chances of gaining more leads in this phase. Your goal is to prepare your team in the late game with as many buffs as possible to increase their potential while you give the highest damage output you can offer.
Teemo with a complete build can be very destructive. Whenever initiators from your team try to engage the enemy champions and hit their CC, assist them by planting shrooms in front of the clash then backing off to a position where you can kite the enemies in front of you without being hit by any abilities from them. This will burst the enemies with your AP while slowing them down allowing more opportunities of your teammates to hit abilities. Team-fights with you in the perfect spot can provide damage and win the trades. When you have dealt with the enemy jungler or reduce their numbers you can try to take on the big buffs and gain more momentum in the game. As you approach either the Baron or Elder, you can plant shrooms close to the river where you know they will be trying to contest. Communicate with your support and collaborate on placing visions and traps with your ultimate(Noxious Trap) to prevent the enemy team from doing anything drastic. If you are in no position to win a big buff, then you can try to let your teammates distract them and hold them off as you split push on the other side of the map. Teemo can easily shred towers and inhibitors which will bring more pressure to the enemy team. If their team tries to recall back and chase you down, it’s time for you to run with your W(Move Quick) and bait them for your team to gain the advantage of taking the buff. Play around your team’s composition and utilize your empowered auto attacks to bring down enemies to your knees.
