Warwick is the uncaged monster who hunts the gray alleys of Zaun. He was once a man who put down his blade and took up a new name to live a better life. But no matter how hard he tries, he can never escape the sins of his past. Transmutated by Singed, he transformed into a beast that seeks for blood. He now roams and hunts those he can prey upon the dark alleys and gnash his teeth between them.  It was written by our team of writers along with the help of Challenger player, Parnellyx, who is an expert in everything Warwick. He is considered by many to be the best in the world at this champion and you can find him Streaming on Twitch. Watch live video from lolparnellyx on www.twitch.tv

Why Play Warwick?

Before we start on the Ultimate Guide to Warwick we first want to tell you why you should play him.  His overall strengths and weaknesses are as follows:

Strengths

  • Great at dueling
  • Great at taking objectives
  • Q outplays
  • Runs people down
  • Turns fight around

Weaknesses

  • Weak against kiting
  • No escape when ultimate and Flash is down
  • Easily countered by grievous wounds
  • Falls late game

Warwick Counters

These champions give Warwick a hard time in game due to having a kit that can stop him from doing what he wants to do.  Here are some of the biggest issues and how you can try to overcome the challenges they bring.

Olaf Icon

Olaf

Olaf is considered a counter because he excels at fighting 1v1 with you while in low HP. His passive, Berserker's Rage is better than your W, Blood Hunt which is extremely difficult to deal with. His E Undertow can also burst you down in an instant as it works as true damage. Your ultimate, Infinite Duress is useless against his ultimate taking away your most important CC ability.  If his ultimate is on cooldown, use this chance to lock him with your ultimate and let your allies follow up.

Karthus Icon

Karthus

Karthus is considered a counter because he deals a strong amount of AP later in the game. Warwick plays very well in the early to mid game, Karthus can easily negate him by slowing the monster down with W, Wall of Pain which will give you a hard time utilizing your movement speed. Do not let him stack Dark Harvest, try to hunt him early in the game as this is where he is the weakest.

Udyr Icon

Udyr

Udyr is considered a counter because he has the ability to hold you down. His DoT damage will continuously stun you with Bear Stance and slash you with Tiger Stance. His ability to swap skills in a few seconds will reduce the effectiveness of your own skills. Deal instant damage to him but do not fight long skirmishes as you will lose.

Warwick Synergies

These champions work well with Warwick and should be considered being picked alongside him if possible.  Here are some of the biggest synergies and how you can abuse them.

Orianna Icon

Orianna

Orianna works well with Warwick as she can stack CCs with him. Whenever Warwick tries to attack with his ultimate, she can easily cast Protect and place the ball with him. As soon he catches someone with Infinite Duress, she can easily activate Shockwave and pull nearby enemies in one area. This will provide a great follow up to your team and destroying theirs.

Morgana Icon

Morgana

Morgana works well with Warwick as he is susceptible to CCs. When Morgana is around, she can easily cast Q, Dark Binding and lock the target. This will make the gank easier for you. Also, utilize her E, Black Shield as you attack the enemy with Infinite Duress. This will avoid any allies from the enemy team stopping your channel.

Jax Icon

Jax

Jax works well with Warwick as he needs an ally who can also dive in the middle of the enemy team. Jax can use E, Counterstrike to dodge all damage and return them to the enemies. This will also stun them which gives you the opportunity to cast a full fear in all their members. Both of them can smack and slash the enemy back and worth as they have both offensive and defensive abilities to utilize.

Warwick Summoner Spells

Warwick’s recommended summoner spells are Smite and Flash. Flash is great to him as it gives Warwick an escape when you don’t have ultimate. It also allows you to close gap enemies with it. You can also swap Flash with Ghost when you are Gold below as it has lower cooldown and will help you better in those divisions.

Warwick Runes and Keystones

Warwick recommended runes are Press The Attack, Triumph, Alacrity, Last Stand on Precision as primary and Nimbus Cloak with Transcendence on Sorcery as secondary. This gives your burst rate ganks and short trades with its damage enhancement for winning duels or for exposing a key target to your team and fight to get a kill. Your secondary runes offer a utility that helps you chase down enemy targets anywhere on the map.

Warwick's Recommended Runes
Warwick's Recommended Runes

If you are dealing with a lot of frontliners, you can consider using Press The Attack, Triumph, Alacrity, Last Stand on Precision as primary and Conditioning with Revitalize on Resolve as secondary. This provides Warwick the sustainability he needs to deal in the mid to late game. It also aids in dealing bruisers and tanks since you can get the most value of Revitalize and spam Q to heal more.

Warwick's Secondary Runes

This ability is extremely good in the jungle as it gives you extra on-hit damage that scales on attack speed. Furthermore, it provides infinite sustain in the jungle and allows you to solo Dragons, tank Barons, skirmish, duel, and fight in lower health. Overall its a solid passive that’s not too flashy.

Q - Jaws of the Beast

This is your bread and butter ability. Not is it your main damage spell but it is also your main survivability tool. It allows you to duel most champions in the game as it heals a lot of your HP enabling you to survive longer in teamfights and skirmishes. Additionally, this ability is your main way of closing the gap that follows dashes, blinks, and some forms of CC. Mastering his Q is your main priority to be great at him as it is such a versatile spell.

W - Blood Hunt

This ability defines him of what he is, a hunter. It is very unique and also versatile as it allows you to fight enemies, clear camps, scout and gank. The ability can locate enemies in the fog of war which makes it easier for you to invade, avoid getting caught, and counterganked. It is very strong as it allows you to gank and chase people down. Almost no one can outrun you when the target is below 20% health and it also gives you an insane attack speed buff.

E - Primal Howl

Warwick's E Ability Named Primal Howl Tooltip

Warwick's E - Primal Howl

This is Warwick’s main defensive tool as opposed to his inherent lifesteal. It can also be used aggressively as well. The main usages for the skill include using it to CC enemies, tank damage, and engage. Using this in conjunction with your Q will allow you to fear a target backward and it makes it harder for an enemy to escape. When dueling, save your E when you are low to bait enemies and maximize your lifesteal.

R - Infinite Duress

Warwick's R Ability Named Infinity Duress Tooltip

Warwick's R - Infinity Duress

This is Warwick’s main lockdown tool as it has a fairly low cooldown, especially when going into the late game. Not only is it a strong suppression for locking down carries and making picks it does a respectable amount of damage and heals work for all the damage dealt. This will make him significantly harder to kill. You are usually immune to CC so do not hesitate to use this ability as an escape.

Ability Skill Order

Warwick's Ability Skill Order
Warwick's Ability Skill Order

The skill order for Warwick is R > W > Q > E.  Start with Q, Jaws of the Beast first then W, Blood Hunt then E, Blood Hunt on levels 1-3. Then you can focus on maxing W, Q and lastly E. The reason is that you want to deal as fast as you can early on with Blood Hunt. This provides the ability to gauge opponents around the map and easily chase low HP targets. Jaws of the Beast should be leveled up next as it is your bread and butter ability for gap closing and healing yourself. Your Primary Howl is mostly a defensive tool to take less damage while sticking to enemies. Take a skill point in your ultimate on level 6,11, and 16.

Warwick Powerspikes

A power spike is when a time champion reaches a level or builds an item that makes them a lot stronger than other champions in the game.  Warwick’s power spike is when he reaches level 9-11 as he has a max W with its full attack speed buff and a second skill point with ultimate. Acquiring Tiamat will also boost your damage in the early and is a must. Adding The Skirmisher’s Sabre will increase the damage of every auto attack you deal the smited target. He falls off hard towards the late game which will reduce his power overall.

How to Play Warwick

Early Game

Warwick has multiple builds to choose from depending on the situation you have in the game. The first and foremost thing you must do is take as many golds as you can early on and maximize the routes. Gaining Tiamat and Skirmisher’s will amplify the damage you can deal when ganking enemy lanes. When playing solo queue, you do not usually rely on your team to win the game. You must measure the capabilities you can do with Warwick. Once you reach level 3, gank behind the enemy in the lane. Watch for champions that have dashes and use your Q Hold when they attempt to escape. It is extremely crucial to capitalize on your early game gank opportunities. If enemy laner has already dropped some HP, focus on that lane as you will gain a massive amount of movement speed the approach the gank quicker. The faster you are, the harder it is for the enemy in the lane to react to your combos. In addition to that, you also gain attack speed that will reap enemies apart. When you reach level 6, consider using your W + R to gank in the lane. Your ability to close the gap of the target increases with Blood Hunt activated. Suppressing your target will give the opportunity for your ally to stack their own CC and kill the target instantly.

Mid Game

In the mid game phase, focus on playing around your ally lanes. Use your Blood Hunt and take out enemies around the map. Try to hold on to your ultimate whenever possible. Losing it when ganking can sometimes let you die. Bait out your spells from your targets so it would be easier to secure the kill. Save your Jaws of the Beast for dashes, cancels, follows and reduces the numbers of the enemy team. It is really a versatile spell so consider the situation for making the action. Also always use your W before you get in vision range if you are ganking above 50% health.

  • Split Pushing –  Warwick can take on a side lane a split push for the time. He duels super well with assassins like Zed, Talon, etc thinking that they can do whatever they want. You can smack their ego and gain more gold for your team. Warwick has the ability to secure a kill as he can easily chase running enemies.

  • Objective Control – Warwick can easily take objectives with abilities. Look to push the lanes and take control of the areas near and objectives before taking it. Taking Dragons is easy for you as using Q + Smite will bring additional damage to the epic monster you are targeting.

Late Game

Warwick focuses on playing around his allies to win the game. Depending on your team composition, Warwick falls off the late game. You should emphasize on bringing your  team to the table in every move you make. You can split push for awhile and attract pressure to the enemy team. If they come to you, you can back and now give an opportunity for your allies to siege another lane. Sieging with Warwick isn’t great for him. Making him stand in front of the fight will not give your team an advantage. Focus on flanking the enemy and targeting squishy champions on your engage. This will reduce their damage dealer at the backline. This is a more favorable position than diving first for the tower. Your goal is to cause some havoc to the enemy team and not standstill. You can deter from flanking if you need to protect an ally at the backline. Enemies will likely counter your flank and target your ADC or mage. You can guard them with your E + R or E + Q + E combo then after they’re safe, you can then attack vigorously to the enemy team. As you approach Barons and Elder Dragons, try to position and time your engage so you can either kill 1 -2 enemies before taking the objective or setup and wombo combo with your allies. This will give your the lead to take the objectives and deal better in game. Warwick is a very versatile champion and can be used as a frontline who picks enemies off or a damage-dealing monster that shreds targets easily. Either way, this is the path to win the game and take a victory.

Warwick Tips and Tricks

  • Only dive with R or Q when you know their heals and shields are down
  • It is ideal to have follow up in every dive like Orianna, Jax to avoid dying alone
  • Time your Q correctly to avoid escapes from champions like Katarina, Leblanc, Ezreal, etc.
  • Be a frontline if your team is fed

Warwick Gameplay

These below videos are great game play examples for how to play Warwick.

Frequent Mistakes/Noob Traps

These are things most Warwick players do that shouldn’t be done at a high level ELO.

Mistake #1 – Not properly using the E for the situation. Your Primal Howl can turn the tide in any teamfight if properly used. You can recast immediately to instantly fear your target or hold it as long as possible and receive 55% damage reduction.

Mistake #2 – Not knowing how to bait with Warwick. In low elos, people tend to chase you when you have low HP.  Your ultimate, Infinite Duress combined with your passive, Eternal Hunger and Revitalize will heal you for a large amount of health while dealing damage to your target. Use this to your advantage.

Mistake #3 – Just using Q to bite enemies. Your Jaws of the Beast is a unique kit for Warwick and should be utilized. You can not be displaced when you hold your Q at the right moment, so timing it perfectly can set you up at the back of your target even if they try to escape from you.

Mistake #4 – Having only one build path. Warwick is great at adapting towards the needs of his allies and you should too. Your build should adjust depending on the current situation of the game. Build aggresive when you are in the lead and defensive when you are having a difficult game.

Mistake #5 – Not practicing your ultimate range. Infinite Duress’ range increases base on your current movement speed. You can surprise enemies with this unique feature so you must practice and memorize the distance it can give you to maximize its potential.

Listed below are some champions you can use to replace Warwick in the jungle. Slashing enemies as they gank lanes. When he isn’t available either banned or picked by the enemy team. This will give you a variety to choose from. Safeguarding your LP from going down and keeping your games awesome.

Rengar Icon

Rengar

High burst in the game, Great dueler and Good split pusher. This assassin is the enemy of Kha’zix. They are both seeking preys to kill and fill their urge to hunt. Rengar can jump through bushes uncontested and deal strikes with his claws. His ferocity increases his damage making this unseen predator a savage hunter to deal with.

Kha'zix Icon

Kha'zix

Insane burst damage, Carry potential and High mobility. If you want a jungle to seeks preys in isolation then this champion is the right option. Your goal is instantly to delete as many enemy champions as you in a short amount of time. Your Void Assault and Leap will surprise ADC as they watch their HP wither away. Kha’zix is the unseen threat everyone should fear.

Olaf Icon

Olaf

Attack speed steroids, High damage output and Tanky overall. Olaf runs through his enemies like no other. He can keep throwing axes with Undertow until his opponents drop dead. His vicious strikes make every swing reckless and unending. No opponent can stop his movement as the power of Ragnarok will break anything who holds him down.

Thanks for the support! I wouldn’t really recommend Warwick in the top lane but I am sure there are videos on youtube that can show you how to do it if you want.

Warwick has slowly become my favorite champion to play in the fungle so far this season. He’s been my best performing champ but was looking for a guide to help diversify how I build him with items/runes since I was fairly linear in that regard. This guide is fantastic for that as well as great insights into matchups and strategies! Thank you!

Only question I have is when do you want to go with the different builds? When is zombie better than tank? Or brusier better than deaths dance?
